Nicholas O’Leary

May – October 2023

About the artist

Nicholas O’Leary (1986) was born and raised in Gisborne, New Zealand, and has been painting since childhood and exhibiting since his teens. After graduating from the University of Auckland with a degree in architecture in 2009, he moved as far as one can from the sunny paradise of Gisborne to Bergen. He still lives in Bergen, often observed hiking in the spectacular mountains, among the fjords, or along the coastline with an easel attached to his backpack in challenging conditions.

The naturalist artist has studied and painted together with several other artists in Norway, as well as being a student of Odd Nerdrum. He has exhibited internationally for the past decade in galleries such as Museu Europeu d’Art Modern (Barcelona), Salmagundi Club, (New York), Principle Gallery (Alexandria/USA), Sugarlift Gallery (NYC), and Galleri Torekov (Sweden).

Exhibition: RAW

In his exhibition at Salteriet Gallery Nusfjord, O’Leary presents 41 paintings that he created during an «Artist in Residence» program in Nusfjord in autumn 2022, as well as a selection of his work from his hometown Bergen.

Ragnhild Lie – Installation

About the artist

Ragnhild Lie, born in Lillehammer, moved to Lofoten after finishing her MA in textile art in Bergen in 1997. She works conceptually with a range of different materials and expressions and has often some humour or distinct statements included in her works. Her wish to spread the use and pleasure of eco-friendly textiles made her start up the company Lofoten Wool in 2014, where the use of local wool is a paramount.

In her project WILD FISH COLLECTED she presents a sheet made from fish skins picked up from the filet factory in Stamsund, Lofoten. Fish skins were widely used in industry before plastic products were invented and poisoned the oceans for ever.

The 178 skins from haddock and 18 skins from cod were dyed in pigments. Since these fish skins themselves contain natural glue no more ingredients were needed. To make the skin dry in the right manner and tempo she discovered that an old fish factory gave perfect conditions to dry in the damp air for one year. It has taken even longer to let the fish smell leave the sheet and make it presentable for an indoor art setting.

Ragnhild Lie is member of The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts, the Association of Norwegian Visual Artists, and Norwegian Textile Artists.
